The launch will take place - appropriately - at Swindon Central Library, at 7pm on Tuesday, December 8, 2009.

A number of other VIPs have been invited, including MPs, MEPs and borough councillors, along with important local figures in the fields of culture in general and literature and history in particular, as well as members of Swindon's Asian community.

Society Chairman Dr John Cullimore said: "As well as bringing Alfred Williams to the attention of more people, we also like to think that the society can be a unifying force for many different people in the town, which is why it's pleasing to bring them together at our launch.

"We believe he stands as a symbol of Swindon's understated contribution to Britain's culture - and how the time has come for us all to celebrate the heritage on our doorsteps."
