Reporting the launch of the Alfred Williams Heritage Society in the Swindon Advertiser, Frances said the town was usually quick to celebrate working class heroes, but had largely overlooked Alfred.

And as she outlined his life and work to readers, she welcomed the fact that the omission was being addressed by the new society, saying it had "embarked upon an ambitious programme to raise the profile of this home-grown literary talent" .
