Will you ever fly me,
Passing ever by me,
Coming never nigh me?
Leaving me to wither,
Droop and die together,
Like a bloom of heather?
Hearing my name spoken,
And your promise broken,
With the slighted token:
Knowing others' blisses,
Secret-minded kisses,
Covert, close caresses?
Other eyes a-viewing,
Other lips a-suing,
Other souls a-wooing;
Other hearts divining,
Love to love inclining,
I alone repining?
Love not ever burneth,
Sometimes love low-turneth,
Draweth back and spurneth,
Standeth still and scorneth,
Sorroweth and mourneth,
At the wage he earneth.
If you still deny him,
Never will come by him,
Openly defy him,
Feigning not to heed him,
Though at heart you need him,
Quickly you will dread him.
