As a result of the Alfred Williams Heritage Society's successful bid for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are now recruiting a part-time project co-ordinator:
Are you interested in Swindon's local heritage?
Do you possess:
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills
- Good literacy and numeracy skills
- IT skills
- The ability to work on your own initiative
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
If you've answered yes to all these questions and you would like to be involved in a project to celebrate the life and works of Swindon's 'Hammerman Poet', read on.
The following is an outline of the vacancy. A formal role profile is available for download here.
Hours and Duration
The successful applicant will be contracted to work 21 hours a week, over a fixed term of one year, starting on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.
The post requires flexibility as some of the tasks will involve working outside normal office hours. For example, the successful candidate will need to be able to attend evening meetings and do some weekend work. He or she must also be available for work during the whole of the period from Friday, November 12 to Sunday, November 14, 2010, inclusive.
Pay
The successful applicant will be paid £16,188 (gross) during the year-long duration of his or her employment.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will require at least basic numeracy, literacy and IT skills.
Experience and Personal Qualities
We are looking for a bright, positive, pro-active all-rounder who is well-organised, but can also demonstrate a real passion for heritage and/or literature.
Previous experience of project management - either in a paid or voluntary capacity - is essential as a key to the success of the Alfred Williams Festival will be the effective co-ordination of a large team of volunteers, both during preparations for the festival and throughout its duration. Good communication and interpersonal skills are therefore essential, but the successful candidate will also require the ability to work effectively and efficiently on his or her own initiative, without close supervision.
The project co-ordinator will be the Society's only paid employee and as such will need to have ambassadorial qualities.
A candidate who can demonstrate an interest in or knowledge of history and/or literature in general, and some understanding of Swindon's local history and heritage, would be well suited to this post. However, these qualities are not absolutely essential, and anyone who could demonstrate enthusiasm for the project would be considered.
The post also calls for some creativity as the Society's committee is keen for the successful candidate to contribute ideas and assistance to help make the festival a success.
Tasks
The successful candidate will co-ordinate the Society's two-day Alfred Williams Festival which takes place on Friday, November 12 (primarily for schools) and Saturday, November 13 (for the general public) at STEAM Railway Museum, Swindon.
The centrepiece of the festival will be a stage musical production, but the co-ordinator will not be required to be involved in the artistic side of the production, which has its own director, musical director, cast and orchestra. However, he or she will liaise closely with all those involved, including a team of volunteers during the festival. He or she will liaise with representatives of the festival venue and other third parties.
The project co-ordinator will report to the Society's committee on progress, at monthly meetings, and he or she may also report on an ad-hoc and/or day-to-day basis with any of three founders of the Society.
As well as co-ordinating the festival, the successful candidate will also assist with the Society's other objectives, and contribute ideas and suggestions at monthly committee meetings.
Eligibility
The vacancy is open to everyone eligible for employment in the UK.
Applications
Applications must be received by Tuesday, April 6, and interviews will probably take place in Swindon on Monday, April 12 or Tuesday, April 13. Candidates selected for interview will be notified on Thursday, April 8 about the arrangements for the interview in the following week. Candidates will not be asked to prepare anything new for interview and it is likely that they will be conducted in the evening, rather than during office hours.
How to Apply
All applicants must apply online - either in the form of a straightforward email, or by attaching a Word document, PDF or similar. Please note that your application needs to be a single document and must include relevant contact details, an outline of your education, experience and qualifications and any other details you feel may be important.
The application must tell us (in not more than 500 words) why you think you make a good candidate, drawing particular reference to how your interests relate to the historical/literary themes of the Society.
We will acknowledge all applications by replying to the address from which they are sent.
